PARTIE 5 – Julian reveals the family split that began before the crash and why he refused to attend Adrian’s second wedding

Julian called the next morning.

I had not contacted him.

He said only:

“I heard you saw him.”

I sat down.

“You knew?”

“No.”

His answer came fast.

Too fast to be fake.

“I found out six weeks ago.”

“Six weeks?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

His silence hurt.

Then he said:

“I was afraid.”

I closed my eyes.

Julian explained that Colleen had admitted Adrian was alive after Julian found a hidden phone bill.

They fought.

Julian demanded Adrian go to the police.

Adrian refused.

Colleen begged Julian to stay quiet until an attorney could “fix everything.”

Then Julian learned Adrian was seeing Tessa.

That was when he stopped speaking to both of them.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I should have.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought if I contacted you, I’d become part of whatever they had done.”

I felt sick.

“So you protected yourself.”

“Yes.”

The honesty made it worse.

Then better.

At least he did not call it love.

He did not call it protection.

He called it fear.

Julian had not attended the wedding.

That was why I had not seen him.

He had also refused to attend any family event involving Adrian.

“Does Tessa know?”

“No.”

I stared at the wall.

“She thinks she’s marrying a man whose legal records say he’s dead.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand how insane that sounds?”

“Yes.”

For the first time, someone in Adrian’s family answered a question without making me doubt the question itself.

Julian sent me screenshots of messages from Colleen.

Please don’t ruin your brother’s chance to fix this.

That was one.

Another said: Meredith will survive.

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

Julian apologized without asking me to forgive him.

That made the apology easier to hear.

I did not forgive him that day.

I did stop hating him.

Julian had kept one voicemail from Adrian.

It said:

“I need time.”

Nothing else.
